Most people find it hard to remember the last time they had backed up the important files on their computer. Hard drives can fail. In such case, if you don’t have the backup of your important files, you will lose data. People find it difficult to get into the habit of backing up their data on a routine basis on CDs or DVDs. Today, we have automatic backup options. Once you get this up and running, you will never have to worry about taking backup manually. To do this all you’ll need is a Windows PC, an external hard drive and an FTP server. Here are the steps you need to follow.
1. Set up your hardware and software
Download and install SyncBack Freeware v3.2.9 which is a free software. After you have connected your external drive to your computer, name it ‘Backup’ and browse to it in Explorer. Create three folders named ‘Daily’, ‘Weekly’ and ‘Monthly’. Your backups will be stored in these three folders.
2. Create backup profile
Fire up SyncBack software. Make a new profile named ‘Daily Local Backup’. Now set the source folder to your documents folder, and the destination to your backup drive’s ‘Daily’ folder.
3. Select the directories to backup
If you want, you can backup the entire ‘My Documents’ folder. Or, you can choose the ‘selected subdirectories’ option. This will let you tell SyncBack to ignore things like ‘My Music’, ‘My Pictures’ and ‘My Videos’.
4. Set up e-mail notification of backup failure
In order to keep track whether the backups are working properly, check out the ‘E-mail the log file when profile is done’ option.
5. Schedule the job
Press the ‘Misc’ tab and hit the Schedule button. Here, you will tell Windows to run this daily backup profile daily. You can set up the time, for example, 2:00AM every night. You must set the password for this scheduled item.
Repeat these procedures for Weekly Local Backup and Monthly Local Backup profiles. Remember to set the directories right and set the schedule properly. Using this automatic approach, you will never have to worry about losing files. Your backups will be taken automatically. In case, any problem occurs, you will be notified by email so that you can take the necessary actions.
